After beating Jose Aldo in a record 13 seconds, there was speculation that Conor McGregor was to move up a weight class to fight at 155lbs. The smack talking fighter has gained something of a cult following, with fans intoxicated by his loud taunting, flashy style and knockout power. His move to 155lbs has now been confirmed as the story was leaked online.
The UFC has decided to give McGregor a straight shot at the title with is opponent to be the formidable Rafel Dos Anjos. McGregor has secured the fight without fighting anyone else in the category, a move which some deem as unfair practice, however I think everyone would agree that they want to see this fight whether you love or hate McGregor.
Although both B.J. Penn and Randy Couture have won titles across two categories, if McGregor were to win the lightweight category title, he would be the first fighter in UFC history to retain two titles simultaneously.
This massive card gets even better with the addition of Holly Holm’s first title defence. The women’s bantamweight titleholder is set for a rematch against Ronda Rousey, (a woman who everyone thought was unbeatable) at UFC 200, so it came as a surprise to many that Holm would fight earlier. Holm is to fight Meisha Tate, who has failed to take the title from Rousey twice, however that does not mean that Tate can be written off, Holm is a different fighter with a different style and Tate is obviously a good fighter or she wouldn’t be in the UFC.
UFC 197 is looking to be an exciting card, but with the amazing year of MMA in 2015, it has to be!
